Description

Pirate Story is composed in the Dorian mode in D, which sounds like the natural minor scale with the 6th degree raised. The 6/8 meter conveys the “swinging” feel of being on a rocking pirate ship amidst the rough waves at sea. Imagine walking the plank in the last four measures. What do you hear happens at the end? These chamber pieces have been adapted from my original collection of piano solos, A Child’s Garden of Verses. The settings of these poems were composed to encourage developing musicians to explore the inherent poetry in music and to be bold in expressing that same poetry in performance. Performers are encouraged to tell the story of the poem in how they interpret and perform the music.
